10 January - 08 February 2015
Opening reception:Saturday, January 10, 18:00 - 20:00
Maki Fine Arts is pleased to present Houkago Remix (after-school remix), a solo show by Fuminao Suenaga, starting Saturday, January 10, 2015. This will be Suenaga's first presentation at Maki Fine Arts.
Born in Yamaguchi, Japan in 1974, Suenaga's work has been gaining attention with major shows in 2014 including his solo show APMoA Project, ARCH vol. 11 Museum Piece at the Aichi Prefecture Museum of Art as well as Born in 1974, the first phase of a 2-part group show celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Museum of Modern Art, Gunma.
Suenaga has been presenting paintings with themes reflecting places and times from his childhood. Through site-specific pieces that he is known for, such as his tangram puzzle paintings that can be rearranged to be customized to the exhibition space as well as his multi-dimensional panel paintings that use maquettes of the venue as motif, Suenaga hints at the essence of drawing through a humorous yet critical eye.
In Houkago Remix, the artist plays with the location of Maki Fine Arts which is inside the 3331 Arts Chiyoda building, a former junior high school transformed into an art center, and presents new works containing motifs of black boards, clocks, origami chains, cardboard boxes, and much more.
