16 March - 06 April 2013
Maki Fine Arts is pleased to present "Red / Blue / Green," a group exhibition organized by our gallery artist Kazuhito Tanaka starting Saturday, March 16, 2013. With his 2012 solo show "Untitled Composition" presented by Maki Fine Arts and the artist-led group show "Her Name is Abstra" organized by him still fresh in our mind, Tanaka has now joined forces with Kyoto-based artist Maiami and NY-based artist Shinsuke Aso to present the upcoming three-artist show. "Red / Blue / Green" will be comprised of various artwork including photography, collage, video, and performance.
The way a simple haiku with limited syllables and words can describe the entire universe; The way an arrangement of a single table and a few chairs can draw out countless voices; The way combinations of red, blue, and green can create an unlimited number of colors; And the way a little more than 100 elements can form every single substance on earth. The complex world (or artwork!) emerging from the combination of simple elements: This is our show's theme the three of us would like to present to you.
In our show, you may find Maiami's effortless voice and dance unexpectedly branching out to fill every corner of the gallery. You may find the collages created with fragments of Aso's daily life casting doubt on your visual perception. And you may find me weaving colors. If you happen to stop by your favorite café after visiting the show, you may be surprised to notice that, unlike before, the cup of coffee and the piece of cheese cake you ordered tastes exceptionally complex. It may even bring a smile to your face. These are just a handful of thoughts that I had while organizing "Red / Blue / Green."

[Kazuhito Tanaka-bio]
Tanaka was born in 1973 in Saitama, Japan. After completing studies at the School of Commerce at Meiji University in 1996 and working as a company man, he headed to the US and graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2004. He continues to produce and showcase photographic works that search the boundaries between abstract and concrete. He is the recipient of the 2011 Tokyo Frontline Photo Award. He is the organizer and executive committee chair of the artist-led "Her Name is Abstra" group show. Tanaka lives and works in Kyoto, Japan.
[Maiami-bio]
Maiami started performing expressive art in Tokyo in 2000. He has organized transient and improvisational speech events, which take shape when people gather to express themselves. After relocating his base to Kyoto in 2002, Maiami has been presenting improvisational performances incorporating poem and music mostly in alternative-space venues. He has been an instructor at the annual Takayama Architecture Summer School held in Gifu, Japan since 2003. Through improvisational performances joined by the students, both Maiami and the students have been experimenting with the thought process involved in architecture and in art.
[Shinsuke Aso-bio]
Born in 1979 in Gunma, Japan, Aso headed to the US after graduating Kitakanto School of Fine Arts in 2000. He is a 2004 graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York. By collecting material from his daily life, deconstructing the original, and then reassembling the materials onto a different surface, Aso creates collages that propose new meanings and point of views. In 2003, he began SAPC, a long-term project selling postcards made from cardboard and packaging material for 25 cents each, which continues today. Aso lives and works out of New York.
