INAUGURAL SHOW - Oscar Oiwa, Katsuhiro Saiki, Yuken Teruya

17 September - 16 October 2010

For its inaugural exhibition, Maki Fine Arts will be presenting a group show of three artists based in New York: Oscar Oiwa, Katsuhiro Saiki, and Yuken Teruya.

A second-generation émigré to Brazil, Oscar Oiwa was originally born in Sao Palo. Moving and living in the cities of Sao Paolo, Tokyo, and New York, and thus, taking on the influences of these various urban environments, Oiwa creates an oeuvre with a unique world view. Taking on the themes of political and societal conflicts, his works have drawn high acclaim. For this exhibition, one of his major works, which graced the cover of the catalogue rainsonee "Painting in the Age of Globalization" (2008), will be presented. It is entitled, "Icebergs".

Katsuhiro Saiki is an artist who has been based and producing artwork in New York since 2002. This show will feature works from his photo series, "Place", which takes the skies of Berlin and New York as its subject. Photographing cross-sections of architecture and open skies, it is evident, given the technique, that the artist is re-constructing his experiences. The works are simple, yet calculated visual formations which point to the painterly potential of the photographic medium.

And finally, hailing from Okinawa, Yuken Teruya uses everyday objects like shopping bags and toilet paper rolls to create artworks with a highly critical stance on contemporary society. The work "Heroes" utilizes "Bingata" which is traditional dyeing of Okinawa. Another work, which arranges the flags of a number of various countries is entitled, "Color the World" and is from his series "Notice- Forest", made entirely of intricately cut paper shopping bags.

It is our sincerest wish that you will be able to see and enjoy these works by three internationally-based artists.
